Notre-Dame International High School : a French and American High School Faculty and Staff
Mr. Zicari earned his bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from Fordham University. He then spent 18 years in business management and training before transitioning to education. He earned his teaching credential from the State University of New York at Buffalo and his M.Ed. from California University of Pennsylvania.
Mr. Zicari joined Notre Dame International High School its first year as the mathematics teacher and has served as headmaster since January 2011. He has taught middle and high school students in the areas of Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Precalculus, and Statistics.
He has taught at-risk math students in both urban and suburban schools and provided academic intervention support for all levels of secondary math.
Chemistry and Physics
Ms. Ketsea earned her BSc in Physics from the National University of Athens (Greece) and her MSc in Science and Technology Policy from the University of Manchester. Following a MBA degree and several years in the business sector Ms. Ketsea decided that the purposefulness of teaching suits her the most and started teaching secondary science and mathematics in London where she received Qualified Teacher Status. She is currently completing her PGCE at the University College London.
Her teaching focuses on making science relevant to teenagers, active learning strategies for science concepts understanding and formative assessment in secondary science.
Finally as a holder of a BA in Graphic Design, she explores ways to employ the interplay between visual, verbal and cognitive communication in science learning.
Mr. Kocheran joined the staff at NDIHS in 2012. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Psychology at California State University at Chico and his teaching credential at CSU at Long Beach. He brings over 25 years of teaching experience in Language Arts and History in the San Diego area. Mr. K created a course at his former school in character education and became a trainer for the program Character Counts! That program is now used district-wide.
His involvement in the development of the whole child went beyond the classroom. His students were involved in community service, working with Make-A-Wish Foundation, for example. For Mr. K there is nothing more rewarding than seeing the sparkle is a student’s eye when he/she accomplishes something they never dreamed they could, watching a student go through a critical thinking process, then having one of those “I get it!” moments.
He has experience in curriculum development, serving as Department Head and training & development in the IB program.
Mathematics and Philosophy
Mr. Mason joined the staff of NDIHS in 2014. He earned a dual bachelor degree in International Politics and Philosophy, as well as his master’s degree in Philosophy from American University in Washington DC. He worked for two years as a teaching assistant in the Department of Political Studies and the Department of Philosophy under Profs. Kotz and Reiman. Mr Mason moved to Beijing in 2006. where he taught IB Philosophy SL and HL for six years, and was the Theory of Knowledge coordinator for four years. Mr Mason earned his Mathematics Teaching certification from Florida. He now strives to share his love of math while teaching AP Calculus, Pre-calculus, and Algebra 2, while also teaching an introduction to philosophy. Mr Mason is also the MUN director, and encourages all students to join this fantastic program.
FLE (French as a Foreign Language)
Mme Champeix-Le Balch earned her bachelor’s in Education at the University of Paris V and holds master’s degrees in the Science of Languages and E-Learning& Learning Management Techniques from the University of Montpellier III. At the beginning of her career, Mme.
Champeix was charged with managing the French Department at the MGIS in India. In 2009 she moved to Paris where she worked as an FLE teacher for Alliance Française up until she established her own FLE company, “LILI” (Learning Interaction Language Innovation) closed in 2013 to join NDIHS full time. Mme Champeix heads the FLE program at Notre-Dame.
FLE (French as a Foreign Language)
Mme Sadowski studied several different foreign languages before her training in French as a foreign language. She has taught French for over 10 years beginning during her own studies at the Sorbonne in Paris. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Modern Languages – English and Spanish and master’s degrees in Education of French and Languages and in English Language and Civilization. She worked also in Poland at the French Institute in collaboration with the French Embassy in Warsaw, then returned to France to work in private schools and companies.
Mr. Ompenda holds a bachelor’s degree in sports education and certificates in first aid and animation. His experience includes working in various schools and with wheel-chair bound children and autistic children. He also ran a basketball program in a penitentiary for minors.
Mr. Roland has been teaching in French schools for over twenty years. He is a prolific artist and mentor with several exhibitions of his work installed in and around Paris and Bretagne.
Language Arts & World Religions
Mr. Sanon holds master’s degrees in English and French Literature & Civilization from Université Paris X. After a distinguished career in the US Navy he taught high school English including AP and IB English and served as chair of the language arts department in a high school in Florida. He returned to Paris in August of 2014 when he joined the faculty of NDIHS. Mr. Sanon is also a first lieutenant in the US Army Reserves and spends several weekends a year serving in his reserves duty.
Biology, Environmental Science, Health & College Planning
Mrs. Zicari earned her bachelor’s degree from Fordham University in Philosophy. After raising her family she returned to school and earned a second bachelor’s and her teacher’s certification in Biology Education from the State University of New York at Buffalo. She is currently working on her master’s degree in curriculum design and technology at SUNY Albany. Mrs. Zicari has experience teaching primary, middle and high school students. She is also certified to teach French as a foreign language.
Prior to coming to NDIHS she taught Biology and Earth Science and worked with struggling students in academic intervention services. She has worked extensively with international high school students as a local representative for Nacel Open Door. With her husband Dan, she is a charter member of the NDIHS faculty.
